Before I continue further, it is necessary here to clarify exactly what is meant by certain key terms and definitions. The aim of this glossary is to give an indication of the breadth of meaning used in autoethnography and indigenous decolonising research. It is preferred that I give you my own definitions rather than simply rely on dictionaries definitions. Terms used only once are not included in the glossary.
- Autoethnography
- A genre of writing where the story-being write, transcribe, analyse and document a story-giver or group’s lived experiences, struggles, personal journey or storying. A method used by researchers in qualitative research. A storying that connects the personal to the cultural, social or political.
- Axiology
- A set of morals or a set of ethics.
- Country
- A place of belonging. Encompasses people, plants, animals, and landscape, it. hills, mountains, waterholes, seasons, and spirits. Part of an Indigenous person's identity.
- Epiphany/epiphanies
- A breakthrough. A revealing moment. A time in an individual's life that represent a turning point.
- Epistemology
- Epistemology relates to knowing/thinking. It is about our cognitive thought processing. It refers to why do we have knowledge? How do we understand knowledge? Is this real? How do I know what is real?
- Ontology
- Ontology relates to being. It is the state of being or existing. Ontology is cosmology and creation and how we exists in this world.
- Re-storying
- A place where Indigenous people can reclaim their voices. Transforms stories of victimhood into stories of resiliency.

- Story-being
- A human or humans. All humans are storytellers and story-givers.
- Story-givers
- One who is telling the story/stories. A narrator.
- Story-receiver
- One who is receiving or listening to the story/stories.
- Story/stories
- An account of past events, incidents, or people's lives, real or fiction. Story is a word which replaces the English word narrative. A word not usually found in the vocabulary of Indigenous peoples. For Indigenous peoples the word story/stories resonates for us, not narratives
- Storying
- The acts of telling a story or stories.
